Can I be a surrogate if I have clinical/chemical depression?

My brother and sister-in-law have been trying to have a baby for 4 years now. They most recently have gone through two rounds of ivf, both have been unsuccessful. They plan on doing one more round, then the plan was to have me be a surrogate for them. I have no question in my mind and heart that I can do it. I was reading through the list of health requirements and I saw anyone on medication for mental health problems would not be eligible. I am on wellbutrin and have been for many years now. I was on it during two of my three pregnancies. I guess now I'm wondering if I will be eligible. Would I be required to go off my medication? And I'm also wondering who actually makes the determination of who is eligible?
Thank you.

If your medications could affect the unborn child, then yes, you would need to go off of them. In your personal situation, this might be the biggest hindrance to you becoming a surrogate mother for your brother.

In most surrogacy situations, intended parents and agencies do not want to get involved in a situation where a surrogate mother needs to get off her medications with unknown consequences.

In your personal situation, because you would be a surrogate mother for a family member, this rule might be allowed to be stretched. You will need to speak with your doctor about this.

I am being a surrogate for my sister in law. I am on celexa and the doctors and pharmasist see no problem with me staying on it through the pregnancy.

I was actually on my current medications while pregnant with my youngest two children. Both were very healthy pregnancies and they are both very healthy children. My ob is actually the dr that prescribed the wellbutrin, and I was told that it was safe during pregnancy.

I would thing that you'd need to go off your medication and see how it affects you before you'd even consider being off of it for 9 months to do a surrogacy. I would also definitely talk to your doctor about it and see if your medication would be safe during pregnancy. I am on an anti-depressant and one of the first things I asked my doctor when she put me on it was if my husband and I were to decide to get pregnant, would I need to go off of it. She said I should be fine. I am on celexa btw.
