Information on Surrogacy

Can you be a surrogate if you've had an abortion?

My best friend & her husband have two children already & she just found out she's 5wks along with number 3. Her husband convienced her that if the pregnancy is all she wants then she needs to have an abortion & apply to be a surrogate... Please help! Personally I'm struggling with the abortion topic to begin with, but being a surrogate is her dream & she'd hate to ruin that. Thanks for your help :-)

Brie,

Your story sounds complex, and it causes concern. To answer the question, does the fact that a woman has had an abortion ruin her chances of becoming a surrogate? No. Unless damage was done to her reproductive organs/abilities while undergoing the abortion, it really does not make any difference one way or another with her desire to become a surrogate mother.

But her living situation will. If your friend is in an abusive relationship, even a mentally abusive relationship, which is what I am reading into this (and I could be off here) then she does not qualify to become a surrogate mother. She must come from a supportive, nurturing home life to be considered. And both her and her husband may be required to go through psychological testing during the matching process.
