My name is Jamie and I am about to turn 30. My husband and I have a beautiful 7 year old son. I had to have a partial hysterectomey last year, but we want 1 more. I still have my ovaries and my sister is willing to carry for me. We don't have $10,000 to spend either. I live in NC and she's in AL. There is so much distance. We just don't even know where to start. What all it consists of or just your basic info. I've read about ivf and art. inc. and that it can run up to $40,000. With it being my sister would it still be like that? I'm just not sure where to begin. Can you help me? Thanks Jamie

Hi Jamie,
Yes, IVF and ART can run up to (or more than) $40K. And no, it really won't matter if it is your sister, a stranger, or even you personally. That's for the medical procedures, not a payment to a surrogate mother.
You might want to consider traditional surrogacy if money is a concern. This would be a child conceived via Artificial Insemination from your sister's eggs and your husband's sperm.
As far as where to start for getting involved in surrogacy, I have put together a page that lists the steps you need to take to get started with surrogacy. You can, of course, skip the section on matching.
