Maternity Advantage, the Maternity Card.

It happens that many surrogate mothers and intended parents are put into an unexpected, and stressful, situation. 

Like all surrogacy agreements, they peruse the surrogate’s personal health insurance, see no surrogacy exclusions, and proceed with getting pregnant.

Then, weeks later, they find that suddenly the insurance company has gotten cold feet and will not cover the surrogate pregnancy.   

This can happen with both traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy, and could put a high level of unneeded stress on both the intended parents and the pregnant surrogate.

It’s a terrifying situation, as because the surrogate mother is already pregnant,  it is difficult to find an insurance company that will insure her.   The prospect of paying cash for an entire pregnancy is daunting. 

Everyone who has health insurance and has ever been to the doctor has seen the main benefit of an insurance company.  It is not necessarily that the insurance company pays most of the bill, its that they refuse to pay most of the bill.

Let me explain.


 

An Example: Last May, my husband had to go to the hospital to do a heart catheterization.  This was a test to see if he had blockages in his arteries.  Previous testing had failed to distinguish either way if that was the case.  So he went and hand the procedure done, outpatient, and luckily found out that he was just fine. The hospital sent the bill to the insurance company, who then sent payment and a notice to us letting us know what our portion of the bill was going to be.  When we got the bill, we were shocked.  Not because of how much we needed to pay, but because of how much the hospital had charged. For this one procedure, which was described to us as a test, the hospital charged just over $28,000.  Our insurance company, however, agreed to settle the claim for a mere $8,500.  That was almost $20,000 taken off the bill.  What would we have done without that insurance company?  Would we really have been expected to pay $28,000 for something that was obviously worth only $8,500?
