I have a close friend in which I said would be her surrogant. After reading some of these questions and answers, I am wondering if I am the best candidate. I am 44, would be 45 at time of delivery. I have had no kids of my own. I have gone through infertility myself. I am very healthy except for asymptomomatic mitral valve regurgitation. This is a difficult decision and I want to do it but am I really her best option?
Reply by Rayven While you are a very nice friend for wanting to help, no, you are not a candidate for surrogacy.
First, you have no children of your own. That automatically puts you out of the running for becoming a surrogate mother. Period.
Second, even if you had children of your own, your age is definitely a factor. An ideal surrogate mother should be under 40 unless she has given birth within the last year or two. There are exceptions to this, but ideally, these are the parameters.
Third, if you have fertility issues of your own, it just doesn't make sense to go through this emotional, physical, and financial process with you.
And fourth, with a heart condition, you may be hard-pressed to find a clinic that would approve you to be a surrogate mother at all.
You can help your friend by being her support person through this journey, but you are most definitely not the right person to become her surrogate mother.
Best wishes to the two of you!
