I am 21 years old and a couple friend of mine who is 12 years older asked me to be a surrogate for them because they are unable to have kids. I am married and we have discussed it and are considering helping them out. But we have not have any kids of our own. My friends mom is a Nurse in delivery and she said that their are risks that might cause me to never be able to have kids again. What are the risks and how common are they? Thank you so much
Reply by Rayven You are not eligible to become a surrogate mother because you have had no children of your own. Period.
But, to go through and answer your question, yes, there are great risks in surrogacy, which is why it is important to be DONE having your own children before you consider surrogacy.
It does happen that surrogate mothers lose their ability to ever have children again. They could lose their reproductive abilities, their ovaries, or even their uterus altogether. Does it happen? Yes. Is it common? No. But, there is an increased chance with surrogacy because of medications that need to be taken and the fact that multiples are much more common with gestational surrogacy than natural.
I would never, ever, under any circumstances recommend a woman become involved in surrogacy who has not completed her own family first. I've seen it happen on more than one occasion where a surrogate mother has turned into an intended mother because she no longer has the ability to have her own children.
