should a mom be compensated for surrogacy yes or no

Hi Alex,
If you're looking for a Yes or No answer, then Yes, a woman should be compensated for becoming a surrogate mother, unless she is a surrogate for close friends or a family member.
But I suspect that you would like to know WHY she should be compensated.
Well, here are a few good reasons:
1. A surrogate pregnancy is not at all like a typical pregnancy. For example, in gestational surrogacy, a woman must administer herself daily injections for several weeks/months in order to supply necessary hormones to her body to continue the pregnancy.
2. A surrogate mother goes through more tests, more appointments, and less control. Things she typically would never have agreed to for her own pregnancy, for example an amniocentesis, often become a mandatory part of a surrogacy.
3. A surrogate mother gives up much for a surrogate journey. For example, in my own case, I was required to live in one particular state during my first surrogacy. My husband had an offer for a transfer out of state which would have come with a large increase in his salary. We had to pass it up because it would have moved us to a less surrogacy friendly state. We lost out on more than $15,000 per year for that one decision alone.
4. Being pregnant is hard work! Couple that with the massive invasion of privacy, the time constraints, the high probability of multiples (twins, triplets, quadruplets, etc) the increased chance of being on bedrest, the fact that a surrogate can't even pick up her own children, and you have an incredible amount of sacrifice.
And finally, the most important reason why women who choose to become surrogate mothers should be compensated......
If they weren't, surrogacy would be few and far between. Thousands of intended parents would be out of luck each and every year, simply because there would be no women there to help them make their dreams of having a child come true.
Best wishes!

should mothers get paid for surrogacy
Do you think if surrogates were more generously compensated in the UK (obviously, without going to extremes) fewer desperate parents would go abroad for their surrogacy arrangements? Would this be a good thing?
